Re: [LACloud-Computing] RE: Elastic Filesystems - I'd definitely suggest looking at MogileFS.  It's not FUSE-enabled, but it's designed for serving "small" files (e.g., docs, images, etc) and to scale massively I'm happy to meet to discuss it more and share my own ex dviner Jan 26, 2010 7:24 PM
RE: Elastic Filesystems - Dave, Good points re additional requirements.  The varying usage patterns and storage requirements may actually lead to the conclusion that we have to roll our own, and won't be able to standardize this type of infrastructure in many cases - ie Specia Darren Jan 26, 2010 4:54 PM
Re: [LACloud-Computing] Elastic Filesystems - I've also used MogileFS.  I personally liked it quite a bit. One critical thing missing from your description is what you intend to use it for.  Key considerations:  - frequency of reads vs writes dviner Jan 25, 2010 3:17 PM
Re: [LACloud-Computing] Elastic Filesystems - You may also want to look at Sun's SAM-QFS. It has been around for ages, and I believe was recently open-sourced. I haven't used it, but on paper it is supposed to handle distribution and replication, and like Lustre is natively mountable through Jordan Mendler Jan 25, 2010 3:10 PM
Re: [LACloud-Computing] Elastic Filesystems - Darren, You will likely be disappointed in that nothing perfect exists. A lot of it depends on the application, as several half-@$$ components exist that could potentially be hacked together.   Jordan Mendler Jan 25, 2010 3:02 PM
Re: [LACloud-Computing] Elastic Filesystems - Darren - I have no experienced with this myself as I have only noticed this in newsletter announcement from Dreamhost - http://ceph.newdream.net/ This may or may not answer some of your needs I'd apprecia Hung Tran Jan 25, 2010 1:27 PM
Elastic Filesystems - I have been scouring the interwebs looking for an elastic filesystem that can be installed (non-S3) on my own gear.   I have probably read about or reviewed 50 different packages, but have yet to find any with the combination of feature Darren Jan 25, 2010 1:13 PM

Re: [LACloud-Computing] 512 Core Cloud - i assume that would only limit us to vfx work, which we were considering but went against since remote renders are feasible, but not that good since the upload speeds need to be pretty much on the network. joe Joseph Nov 2, 2009 2:51 PM
